Surfing the Internet on the Nintendo DS Lite
Saturday, October 24th, 2009Nintendo DS Lite is not only a game console. You can also use it for surfing the Internet, anywhere in the Wi-Fi (hotspot) area. Thanks to Opera who created an Internet browser for surfing the websites and checking e-mail.
Actually your DS Lite doesn’t have the Internet browser, you need Nintendo DS Internet Browser, sold separately. To run the browser on the console, you need to upgrade its RAM. Fortunately, Nintendo DS Internet Browser cartridge is bundled with a RAM expansion. To install the Nintendo DS Internet Browser package to your DS Lite, insert the browser cartridge into cartridge slot behind the console, and insert RAM expansion into the Game Boy Advance slot – in front of the console. (If you have original Nintendo DS, there is also available the Nintendo DS Internet Browser version for the console.)
After inserting the cartridge and the RAM expansion, then turn your DS Lite on. The first time you run the browser, you have to do some setups. The setups are selecting keyboard language, setting up the time zone of your region, creating a password (if you wish to use it), and setting up the Internet connection. If you have used your console for playing Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection-compatible game, you do not need to do any more Wi-Fi configuration for connecting it to the Internet. The Nintendo DS Browser is ready for accessing the Internet.
When surfing the Internet, your DS Lite may be slightly slow when loading the Web pages. But the flaw is not big deal compared to it’s convenience for surfing the Internet anywhere in the hot spot area. You don’t need to bring a bigger system such as a laptop for just browsing Internet on the go. And you have larger screens for displaying the Web pages than a smart phone.
You will even have two screens of the DS Lite for displaying Web pages. Both screens can display a Web page at the same time. The upper screen displays top part of a web page, and the lower screen displays the rest, they combine to make a single screen. And you have another option: the upper screen displays the normal page, and the lower screen displays a soft keyboard for entering Web addresses or completing forms.
On the other view mode, you can also see a smaller version of a web page on the lower screen which has a zoom window that you can move around with the stylus. Place the zoom window on any area and the magnifying area will appear on the upper screen.
The Nintendo DS Browser has usual browser functionality, including a forward and back buttons, refresh, find, zoom, remove images, and save your bookmarks. While the browser can display Java-Scripts and images of all sizes, but it does not support audio, video, and flash. Also, if you revisit a website, the page will be loaded completely again because there’s no cache.
